Food is the staple at many holiday meals across the country, but for families struggling to make ends meet, butter and other dairy products may not make it to the table.
Since 2013, the Dairy Farmers of Washington (DFW) have partnered with Second Harvest to get local milk into each one of Tom’s Turkey Drive Thanksgiving meal boxes. The donation of one half-gallon of 2% Darigold milk has been used to make countless Thanksgiving meals complete for families all over Spokane and the surrounding area.
This year, for the first time, DFW will also be donating one-pound of Darigold butter for each meal box. This investment aligns with the dairy community’s desire to ensure every family has access to safe and healthy food.
Julie Humphreys, Community Relations Manager with Second Harvest, says butter is a welcome addition to the meal box, adding a natural, Washington grown product to the mix.
“Dairy is always one of our most requested items from people needing food assistance,” Julie explained. “Butter is such a staple when it comes to the holidays—whether it’s for mashed potatoes or baking a family recipe, we believe everyone should have access to it. We are extremely grateful to the dairy community for providing both milk and butter this year. ”
